Grant Program:
Soil Carbon and Methane
Grant Activity:
Filling the spatial gaps for low-cost soil carbon measurement in rangelands
Purpose:
The Australian 2021 Carbon Credits Methodology Determination encourages the use of soil C models as a cost-effective means to predict soil C stock change at scale. Current spatial modelling of soil C stock in rangelands uses coarse estimates of biomass with great uncertainty as a proxy for annual C input to soil. Species composition and quality of the biomass are critical factors affecting soil C change. These two factors have not been successfully captured in the current carbon estimation approaches. The project will develop core algorithms to cost-effectively extrapolate high spatial resolution Botanal data (0.25 m2) to coarser low cost satellite imagery for spatial soil C measurement and modelling across rangelands. The approved funding amount for this project was less than the $50,000 minimum grant amount outlined in the guidelines. It was agreed that the same project scope could be delivered for less Commonwealth funding, resulting in better value for money outcomes for the Commonwealth.
