PBS Program Name:
DCCEEW 21/22 Reducing Aus Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Grant Program:
Soil Carbon and Methane
Grant Activity:
Advancing rapid in-field quantification of Soil Organic Carbon
Purpose:
Harnessing advances in geophysics and filling a gap in Australia's research capability, the project will progress non-invasive cost-effective monitoring of soil organic carbon (SOC). The outcome is knowledge to develop methodology to substitute laborious soil collections and analyses. Scanning a range of frequencies, the probe inserted into soil emits wavelengths to extract information from soil electrical properties. With successful early tests, ideal frequencies for different soil and SOC types will be identified. Use at the landscape level with simultaneous prediction of multiple soil analyses is envisaged. The project will lay the foundation for patentable sensor and imaging technology to support carbon sequestration strategies.
