Grant Activity:
Accessible STEM Workshops for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children
Purpose:
Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are often socially isolated in their school and community. Being singled out as being different, and not having a supportive peer group is incredibly challenging. This results in poorer quality-of-life outcomes that continue into adulthood such as poorer employment and education prospects.
This project will collaborate with the Junior Science Academy and Australian Hearing Hub to deliver a free science workshop for 48 DHH children in Australia. The aim of this project is to provide a healthy communication space to encourage bonds between DHH peers; showcase the gold standard in education accessibility; and develop the next generation of scientists with a lived experience of hearing loss.
