Grant Program:
Koala Conservation and Protection
Grant Activity:
Bangalow Koalas Community Wildlife Corridor
Purpose:
Koala habitat in this area is highly fragmented, existing largely as riparian areas and small pockets of, or isolated paddock, trees. Planting here will improve the extent, quality and connectivity of koala habitat in strategic locations, as well as reducing threats to the local koala population from car strike and dog attack, as koalas will spend less time on the ground moving between trees. By linking planting into riparian areas it will also allow koalas to move to a safe refuge away from the riverbank during times of flood. Key activities include weed removal, planting 12,375 trees (60% koala / 40% other local trees), maintenance of trees, and some fencing at Fairy Hill to protect the trees while they establish.
