Grant Program:
Methane Emissions Reduction in Livestock
Grant Activity:
A national approach to sheep methane mitigation
Purpose:
This project is coordinated under the National Sheep Methane Program and spans activities in NSW, SA and WA. The aim is to evaluate the effect of the supply of three commercially available anti-methanogenic supplements, namely Asparagopsis, Bovaer and Agolin, on methane mitigation and productivity in sheep. Sheep are evaluated at flock level over two lambing seasons and a wide range of pasture conditions. The data from these studies will deliver information about the effect of methanogenic supplements on wool and meat productivity traits in relation to supplement type, frequency of feeding and safety. Whole of flock data will be relevant to wool and meat supply chains and the economics of future carbon neutral sheep farming systems.
