Purpose:
The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is a key economic development agency in the Government of South Australia, with responsibility for the prosperity of the state's primary industries and regions.
This project aims to adapt and evaluate a range of existing systems to deliver two different classes of antimethanogenic additives, when implemented either as a feed additive, or via adapted drinking water delivery technology to grazing sheep. The project will examine the form and the additive delivery methods, acceptance, dose, extent and persistency of methane abatement, and identify any other benefits in sheep. The main outcomes will be confirmation that antimethanogenic additives can be effectively delivered to Australian grazing sheep to produce a sustained reduction in methane, while maintain or improve animal health, wellbeing and productivity. The outcomes will feed into National Sheep Methane Program and further projects.
