Koala diet, habitat mapping and corridor restoration in Port Stephens
Purpose:
The project aims to improve data and knowledge of the Port Stephens koala population to support effective decision making and conservation action. Key activities to be undertaken are:
- Koala scat analysis to identify dietary composition and variability amongst local-subpopulations
- Vegetation mapping across the Local Government Area
- Preparation of a koala habitat map
- Identification of key koala corridors
- Restoration and enhancement of priority koala linkage areas through targeted weed control
- Modelling the density of Koalas over the Port Stephens region in order to build a spatial map that indicates the abundance of koalas within Port Stephens
The outcomes of this project will directly inform Council's Koala Strategy and will support effective decision making and conservation actions.
