Grant Activity:
Non-invasive imaging of atherosclerotic plaque: quantification of disease activity for improved identification of patients with residual cardiovascular risk
Purpose:
At present, some 50% of heart attacks are caused by the rupture of 'high-risk' plaques that cannot be detected by currently available routine, non-invasive tests. We discovered that the activity of the enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) in arteries can be used to identify and differentiate high-risk from 'low-risk' plaques (which currently can be detected and treated). This project will assess a novel non-invasive imaging tool that measures MPO activity for its ability to identify high-risk plaque.
