PBS Program Name:
DCCEEW 22/23 Reducing Australia's Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Grant Program:
Methane Emissions Reduction in Livestock
Grant Activity:
Methane throughout the beef cattle production cycle in southern Australia
Purpose:
This project aims to further investigate the maternal seaweed supplementation of pregnant cows and the long-term effects on methane, rumen microbiota and growth performance of the progeny. Biserrula and seaweed supplements will be used during times of feed shortage and low feed digestibility. Many other anti-methanogenic feeds in combination with seaweed will also be fed to reduce methane emissions in growing and finishing steers. Two methodologies to measure methane emissions will be compared to validate a potential tool to be adopted on-farm. This project aims to trial and demonstrate innovative and cost-effective on-farm practices of reducing methane emissions throughout the production cycle considering low labour input on-farm.
