Visions of Australia
Grant Activity:
Rauschenberg & Johns
Purpose:
The tour of Rauschenberg and Johns: Significant others draws from the National Gallery of Australia’s extensive and world-renowned Kenneth Tyler Collection of prints. In the early 1950s, New York’s Abstract Expressionist art movement was in full swing, while political persecutions and homophobia marked the Cold War era United States. Against this backdrop, a new avant-garde movement emerged from the shared studio of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. As queer artists, they began to incorporate everyday signs, objects, and media into their work to question what role the audience and artist have in coming to a shared understanding of art.
