The NHMRC-Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Healthy Cities Implementation Science (HCIS) Team Grant Scheme supports Australian participation in international collaborative research through the CIHR Healthy Cities Research Initiative.

Projects involving Australian researchers based in Australia that are deemed fundable by CIHR, may be eligible for NHMRC support.

Eligible Topics

The six HCIS thematic research areas are: 

• Healthcare Systems, Services and Policies
• Healthy Ageing 
• Musculoskeletal Health, Mobility or Prevention (including skin and oral health) 
• Type 2 Diabetes Prevention
• Urban Indigenous Health
• Population and Public Health

Applications are only required to be submitted to NHMRC if you have been invited to submit a full application to CIHR.

Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the NHMRC-CIHR Healthy Cities Implementation Science Team Grant Scheme 2021 Guidelines.

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions. A list of NHMRC approved Administering Institutions is available at:

The Australian applicants must be successful through the CIHR Healthy Cities Research Initiative review process to be eligible to receive funding from NHMRC.

$5,000,000.00

Applications must be made to, and approved through the CIHR Healthy Cities Research Initiative review process to be eligible for funding from NHMRC.

Applications are only required to be submitted to NHMRC if a Stage 1 submission has progressed to the Stage 2 application. The Australian Chief Investigator A (CIA) must forward evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application, with their NHMRC application, to the NHMRC by the advertised closing date and time.

Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online Grants Management System (Sapphire) unless otherwise advised by NHMRC.

A complete NHMRC–CIHR Scheme Application must consist of the following:

• Completion of the relevant sections of the application form;
• The relevant information in the applicants Sapphire Profile;
• A copy of the Proposal submitted to the CIHR and evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application.

NHMRC will fund the Australian component of the highest ranked eligible projects across the six CIHR HCIS Team Grants funding opportunity thematic areas. The maximum amount of funding is up to $1,250,000 per grant over five years, enough to fund a maximum of four grants.
