Description:

The 2020-21 Budget Measure - National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan – Pillar 5 – Workforce and Governance, announced up to $5.151 million to support the attraction, upskilling, and retention of key mental health professionals to address mental health workforce shortages. The Mental Health Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships Program (the program) will run over two years from 2021-22 to 2022-23.

The program has two components: 

  • Mental Health Nursing will support up to 126 postgraduate scholarships relating to mental health and suicide prevention 
  • Allied Health Professionals and Psychologists will support up to 152 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships relating to mental health and suicide prevention through tertiary, vocational and continuing professional development courses.

A minimum of five percent of all scholarships will be prioritised for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.

This is a national program, however, preference will be given to those applicants who are living and/or working in areas classified under the Modified Monash Model 2019 (MMM) classification system as MM 3-7.

Rationale for Invitation: The eligible organisation is invited to apply for this grant opportunity as they have been assessed to have:

  • demonstrated capability to deliver the project activities in the project locations
  • existing infrastructure and relationships to support the project activities
  • appropriate cultural awareness
  • community linkages, and
  • experience, knowledge and capability to deliver the project objectives and outcomes.

Australian College of Nursing (ACN) are the pre-eminent and national leader of the nursing profession in Australia and are uniquely placed to continue their significant role in the development and support of the nursing sector. ACN advocate for the nursing profession and are responsible for advancing the profession through nurturing leaders and providing leadership in nursing. ACN have strong marketing strategies and can reach an audience of just under 70,000 nurses, including both members and non-members of their organisation.

ACN has developed significant expertise in the delivery of scholarships, currently administering three schemes on behalf of the Australian Government.
