Description:

The ASSP - Grant Program (the Grant Program) is a closed, non-competitive grant program that provides financial support to the IAEA relating to the Resource Mobilisation Priorities (RMP) and Development and Implementation Support Programme for Nuclear Verification 2024-2025 (D&IS Programme) through the ASSP.

This Grant Program enables the Australian Government to provide direct financial support through the ASSP to the IAEA D&IS Programme consistent with policy intentions.?The ASSP coordinates Australian research and development efforts or through limited “in-kind” support procured or delivered by ASNO for the IAEA. The ASSP also delivers improvements in the IAEA safeguards management systems and supports more efficient safeguards and verification operations internationally, in recognition of their central importance to the global non-proliferation architecture.

The objectives of the Grant Program is to strengthen safeguards and verification operations internationally and support IAEA development and implementation of new and existing techniques and technologies for verification and safeguards measures that meet domestic and IAEA regulatory requirements; and to support the development of Australian safeguards expertise and capability to ensure the effective operation of the Australian safeguards system.

The Grant Program will provide up to $9 million dollars (all amounts are in AUD) in funding between 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 financial years for research and development initiatives.

Eligibility:

The ASSP Grant program is only open to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).   The ASSP Grant Program is a closed non-competitive grant program as the IAEA is the only body that implements nuclear safeguards internationally and it coordinates most of the nuclear safeguards research and development efforts through the D&IS as both the key peak body and end user of safeguards techniques, technologies and methods. Funding the IAEA through the ASSP is the most effective pathway to enhance and broaden Australia’s safeguards efforts. Activities under the ASSP directly contribute to the national enhancement of nuclear safeguards to ensure compliance with Australia’s treaty and regulatory obligations, and the outcomes of the IAEA’s Department of Safeguards.
