Description:

The Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Advanced (Defence) Science and Technology Grant Opportunity (the program) will run over 10 years from 2023-24.

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission will provide an annual scholarship (Distinguished Chair) to exceptional individuals to carry out research in Australia for 5-6 months. The Commission facilitates and administers the application and interview process, travel arrangements and reporting. The Commission works with the Department of Defence to select candidates.

The Distinguished Chair will undertake research in a field approved by Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), and provide regular reports to their immediate supervisor and DSTG sponsor. The recipient will be required to undertake outreach activities in conjunction with DSTG, such as supporting workshops, special lectures, and engagement with the Australian science community, and DSTG STEM outreach programs.

The scholarship is dedicated to bringing United States (U.S.) experts in DSTG’s key research areas to Australia, working with DSTG offices, research groups and partners, to contribute to DSTG’s key research areas. Research areas include:

  • hypersonics
  • directed energy
  • trusted autonomy
  • quantum

The intended outcome of the program is to promote educational and cultural exchange between Australia and the U.S. to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen relations between the two countries.
