2021 TCR into Biotoxin-related illnesses

Description:

A TCR is a one-time solicitation for grant applications to address a specific health issue. A TCR specifies the scope and objectives of the research to be proposed, application requirements and procedures, and the review criteria to be applied in the evaluation of applications submitted in response to the TCR.

The 2021 TCR into Biotoxin-related illnesses implements the Australian Government’s response to Recommendation 6 in the Report on the Inquiry into Biotoxin-related Illnesses in Australia. The Inquiry sought to better understand the ill effects suffered by people exposed to contaminated indoor environments, most commonly water-damaged buildings. As part of the Inquiry, the Committee reviewed the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of biotoxin-related illnesses such as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).

The objectives of the 2021 TCR into Biotoxin-related illnesses are to:

  • Develop a scientifically valid, evidence-based understanding of the pathophysiology and aetiology of CIRS and other biotoxin-related illnesses.
  • Establish a case definition for CIRS and other biotoxin-related illnesses that will guide testing and diagnosis, including the identification of potential biomarkers.
  • Develop an evidence base that will underpin treatment and management strategies.

The intended outcomes of the 2021 TCR into Biotoxin-related illnesses are:

  • A better understanding of how people with chronic symptom complexes, such as those associated with exposure to biotoxins, can be more effectively diagnosed, treated and managed in the health system.
  • Improved research capacity in the field of CIRS and other biotoxin-related illnesses.
