Description:

The Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme (IAHP) funds a range of activities including primary health care, child, maternal and family health, and chronic disease prevention and management.

The purpose of the grants in this Grant Opportunity Guideline is to support primary prevention activities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and adults by encouraging healthy lifestyles through physical activity, including as part of sporting programs. The objectives of the grants are:

• to develop future health leaders to advocate, champion and deliver health promotion and preventative health activities and services;

• to support and encourage Indigenous men, women and children to become more physically active, improve their food choices, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and reduce their risk of chronic disease.

The intended outcomes of the grants are:

• The delivery of a specific Indigenous health promotion and leadership program that recruits, develops and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to train for and run in marathons, including undertaking educational and leadership training.

• The delivery of the John Moriarty Football program to young community members in the Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

• The delivery of the REAL Health Program to address barriers to health and wellbeing by engaging Aboriginal youth and focusing on physical activities that encourage cultural connection, nutrition, health and mental wellbeing, mental health first aid training and fitness.
