Description:

The ‘Improving health outcomes of First Nations people with MJD and SCA7’ grant opportunity will support the Machado-Joseph Disease Foundation (MJDF) to continue to provide primary health programs to support First Nations people in remote communities with MJD and SCA7 under the Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme (IAHP).

The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are to:

•              improve the health of First Nations people with MJD and SCA7, especially in remote areas,

•              improve access for First Nations people with MJD and SCA7 to high-quality, comprehensive and culturally appropriate primary health care, and

•              improve primary health care services for First Nations people with MJD and SCA7.

The funding will support:

1. The Neurology Clinics program which provides regular access to specialist neurologist and integrated multidisciplinary care support for MJDF clients living with MJD and SCA7, and ensures clients are ‘trial ready’ when the opportunity comes for clinical drug trials.

2. The Genetic Care program which provides information, access to counselling, and support during the process of genetic testing. The program also develops and delivers education resources to provide genetic information about MJD and SCA7.

3. The Clinical Education program which ensures health professionals looking after people with MJD and SCA7 have the most up to date clinical information, are supported, and have access to the resources needed to provide best practice care.
