Description:

The Improving First Nations Cancer Outcomes grant opportunity was announced as part of the 2023-24 Federal Budget. The purpose of this grant opportunity is to support the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) sector to respond to and improve cancer-related health outcomes, tailored to local need and priorities. This is consistent with Priority Reform Two of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap .

Funding will support the implementation of the forthcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan with a focus on achieving equitable outcomes across cancer journeys at both the individual and community level. The program will also focus on reshaping the cancer narrative from fear and stigmatisation to empowerment.

The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) were assessed as the only organisation that can deliver this program based on:

  • existing infrastructure and relationships to support the grant activity
  • knowledge of and capability to deliver the project objectives and outcomes
  • strong links with the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector, and
  • a long term and effective relationship with the department.

NACCHO is the national leadership body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health in Australia and is the national peak body representing 145 ACCHOs across Australia. ACCHOs are trusted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, making them ideally placed to promote and support cancer prevention, improve participation in cancer screening, and facilitate engagement with mainstream health services for cancer treatment. ACCHOs deliver culturally safe, holistic healthcare services for approximately 50% of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with over 550 clinic locations and more than 3 million episodes of care per year. This includes about one million episodes of care in very remote regions.

NACCHO has demonstrated experience in coordinating and codesigning complex sector-wide policy and program documents. This includes the Core Services and Outcomes Framework (NACCHO - NACCHO Core Services and Outcomes Framework), as well as various program approaches such as the End Syphilis Response (Enhanced Syphilis Response (ESR) - NACCHO). NACCHO possess the expertise, experience and knowledge required to deliver this program on time and within budget and have successfully delivered other Government programs to a high standard.
