Description:

The purpose of the grant is to have an Administrator for the NRHSN from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023.

This activity contributes to the achievement of the department’s Outcome 1: Health Policy, Access and Support.

This grant was announced as part of the October 2022 Federal Budget to extend the arrangements of the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program.

The RHMT supports health students to undertake rural training through a network of rural clinical schools (RCS), university departments of rural health (UDRH), dental faculties offering extended rural placements, and the Northern Territory Medical program. The program also supports regional training hubs tasked with building medical training pathways within a region, and guiding students and trainees through these. The aim of the RHMT is to improve the recruitment and retention of health professionals in rural and remote Australia. There are 21 universities currently participating in the program across Australia.

The NRHSN is complementary to the RHMT and supports the program to achieve its objectives and outcomes.

The NRHSN is the representative body for multidisciplinary health students pursuing rural careers. It is a national, rural health focused, multidisciplinary student network representing more than 11,000 medical, nursing, dental and allied health students across a network (of up to 29) RHMT and non RHMT university Rural Health Clubs around Australia.

A key feature of the NRHSN is its representation of rural students across a range of health disciplines.

The aims of the NRHSN are to:

  • provide a voice for multidisciplinary students who are interested in improving health outcomes for rural and remote Australians; and
  • promote rural health careers to students and encourage students who are interested in practising in rural health care in the future.
