In the 2022-23 Budget, the Government announced $4 million over 2 years to expand the Suicide Prevention Research Fund delivered by Suicide Prevention Australia. This measure is targeted to specifically address suicide prevention research priorities and flexibly respond to emerging research needs, such as transitioning out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The objectives of the grant opportunity are to:

• deliver two-year targeted research grants structured with an implementation science approach,

• develop an early career research development program for suicide prevention, and

• develop a co-designed professional development program for suicide prevention service providers.

The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are to:

• improve suicide prevention models and practices that support individuals, families and communities,

• consolidate, centralise and expand the Research Fund, while complementing the Million Minds Mission National Health and Medical Research Council program,

• build upon existing work to drive suicide prevention research, for improved suicide prevention program and service development,

• extend and enhance evidence-based innovation research to build the capacity of the sector for quality improvement and best practices in suicide prevention programs and services, and

• identify and commission pieces of work identified as gaps in research knowledge and data.
