First Nations Vaccination Uptake Support Program
The First Nations Vaccination Uptake Support Program (the program) will run over 2 years from 2024-25. The program was announced as part of Longer-term Funding to Implement the National Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategies and First Nations Communicable Disease Support in the 2024-25 Budget.
The program aims to address declining First Nations vaccination rates. It aims to increase antenatal, childhood and adult vaccination uptake for First Nations people attending Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS). It will support ACCHS to deliver community-led, targeted and culturally safe and appropriate vaccination, education, engagement and communications activities. It includes establishing First Nations immunisation coordination roles within the First Nations health sector.

To be eligible, you must be the listed organisation and have received an invitation to apply from the department.
The eligible applicant was determined as the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). NACCHO provides significant expertise on First Nations cultural and social determinants of health including on the barriers, gaps, and opportunities for strengthening delivery of vaccines by ACCHS and in community. This includes addressing workforce issues, education, training and maintaining community confidence in ACCHS. NACCHO is the only community-controlled organisation that can deliver the program.
NACCHO are also the national leadership body for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health sector in Australia.
NACCHO provides:
- Existing infrastructure, professional networks and community relationships to support the grant activity.
- Knowledge of and capability to deliver the project objectives and outcomes.
- Strong links with the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Sector, and
- Long-term, effective relationship with the Department of Health and Aged Care, including a history of collaborative partnership and delivery of results.
NACCHO has the proven skills, qualifications, and experience to undertake the grant activity and is well positioned to facilitate community to facilitate community-led, culturally appropriate community engagement that focuses on the achievement of the outcomes and objectives of this grant opportunity and meets the needs of First Nations communities.
