Description:

FASD is a preventable developmental disability where alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause damage to the developing fetus, potentially causing an increased likelihood of premature birth and permanent damage to their brain and other critical organs. If a baby is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy, it can lead to FASD.

The purpose of this grant opportunity is to provide for an expansion of FASD diagnostic services to ensure availability across Australia, with a particular focus on communities with a demonstrated need for FASD Diagnostic Services.  To provide national coverage, services must be established in New South Wales (including regional clinics), Regional Victoria and Southern and Central Queensland. Organisations can apply to deliver services in one of these locations, or multiple.

These locations have been identified based on population numbers, alcohol consumption data, treatment service data and feedback from stakeholders and communities.

This grant opportunity was announced as part of the 2020-21 Budget Measure FASD Diagnostic and Support Services 2020-24 in support of the National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Strategic Action Plan 2018-2028 (FASD SAP).

In 2018, states and territories and the Australian Government endorsed the FASD SAP. The three key aims of the FASD SAP are to:

  1. reduce prevalence of FASD;
  2. reduce the associated impact of FASD; and
  3. improve the quality of life for people living with FASD.

The Expansion of FASD Diagnostic Services grant directly links to the overall aims and objectives of the FASD SAP, and aligns with the priority area of Screening and Diagnosis.
