Description:

The objective of this grant opportunity is to provide grants of financial assistance to support medical research and medical innovation projects that:

Stream 1 (Priority areas 2.1 and 2.2, Incubator Grants): Small-scale developmental projects to improve:

  • Topic A: the early detection and response to new trends of substance use
  • Topic B: the understanding of, and how to address the rise of, anxiety disorders in children and young Australians (0 to 25 years)
  • Topic C: the understanding of, and how to address the rise of, depression in children and young Australians (0 to 25 years)
  • Topic D: the understanding of, and how to address the rise of, self-harm in children and young Australians (0 to 25 years)

Stream 2 (Priority areas 3.1 and 3.2, Targeted Call for Research): Mid-career researcher (MCR)-led large-scale implementation research projects involving multi-institutional collaborations consisting of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams to bring into practice new evidence-based preventions, interventions, models of care and improvements to workforce capability.

Applicants to this grant opportunity must propose to conduct research that delivers against the above objectives and those of the Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission described in the Roadmap and Implementation Plan.

This grant opportunity is being administered by NHMRC on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Applications will only be accepted from approved MRFF Eligible Organisations. A list of approved MRFF Eligible Organisations is available from the MRFF Eligible Organisations List on the NHMRC website.

Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the Medical Research Future Fund – MMMHRM – 2026 Mental Health Research Grant Opportunity Guidelines.

Grant Activity Timeframe:

For Incubator grants (Stream 1): within 2 years from the commencement date specified in the grant schedule.

For Targeted call for Research grants (Stream 2): within 5 years from the commencement date specified in the grant schedule.

Total Amount Available (AUD):

$18,830,000.00

From $0.00 to $5,000,000.00

Instructions for Application Submission:

Applicants are advised to read the Grant Guidelines thoroughly and liaise with the MRFF Eligible Organisation that will submit the application to identify any specific requirements that the Organisation might have.

Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online granting system (Sapphire).

Other Instructions:

Minimum data closes at 5:00pm (ACT Local Time) on 19 August 2026.

Questions should be submitted no later than 1:00pm (ACT Local Time) on 9 September 2026.
