Business Research and Innovation Initiative
Grant Activity:
Turning farm crops into renewable hydrogen source
Purpose:
Wildfire Energy's project 'Hydrogen production from biomass using the MIHG process' will provide a comprehensive feasibility study into using grain crop residues to manufacture hydrogen and biochar in order to add value to the grain cropping industry. The Darling Downs–Maranoa region in Queensland will be used as a case study. Hydrogen production at the farm, multi–farm and regional processing scales will be evaluated and Wildfire's MIHG process will be used for the gasification technology. The study will consider the 'farming system' perspective and evaluate: i) the cost of producing hydrogen; ii) the value of returning biochar to fields; and iii) the potential to co–process farm residues and general wastes with grain crop residues.
