Scientific exchange: Metal additive manufacturing
CSIRO and JWRI (Joining and Welding Research Organisation) of Osaka University have collaborated for 20 years on the topic of arc welding with enormous success. Both organisations now have a strategic focus on metal additive manufacturing (3D printing), a modern manufacturing technique for the production of components with properties not achievable by traditional approaches. The project will expand the existing collaboration into this new field. A broad range of relevant topics will be in scope, including process optimisation, computational modelling and non-destructive testing. An initial virtual meeting between key researchers and managers will determine projects of mutual interest. A subsequent application will be made to support visits of selected researchers to CSIRO and to JWRI for intensive discussions and presentations. Local industry would participate in these meetings, allowing the showcasing of Australian R&D to Japanese companies and vice versa. The project will build goodwill between our organisations, sharpen their research focus on projects critical to industry, and allow CSIRO to highlight Australian skills in this area and increase our visibility to both research institutions and manufacturers in Japan. More broadly, the project will build links between Australian and Japanese researchers and manufacturers.
