Grant Activity:
Bio-engineering vascularized skin flaps for complex wound reconstruction
Purpose:
Serious 'difficult to heal' skin wounds are repaired by harvesting thick 3-dimensional pieces of skin from other sites on the patient to cover and heal the wound. This surgery is complex creating a second wound on the patient, involves frequent complications and is costly. This project will engineer in the laboratory human skin flaps derived from the patient's own cells which will eliminate skin flap harvest and reduce patient complications, pain and costs.
