Grant Activity:
Genomic medicine for Indigenous Australians
Purpose:
Whole genome sequencing of individuals from four remote Indigenous communities uncovered genomic patterns that suggest why previous studies failed to identify the genetic basis of two important diseases. We will use this information to develop a novel approach to find the causes of chronic kidney disease in people from the Tiwi Islands. These genetic patterns also allow us to recommend guidelines that increase the chance of success for future mapping projects in other Indigenous communities.
