Truth-telling Australia's colonial past with art by non-Indigenous artists
Purpose:
This project aims to address creative practices by non-Indigenous artists that confront Australia's difficult colonial past by advancing best practice approaches for the creation of such artworks. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the area of contemporary art using an innovative approach that combines practice-led, artistic research with interdisciplinary decolonial methodologies. Expected outcomes of this project include improved approaches to how the art sector engages with uncomfortable colonial histories. This should provide significant benefits such as enhanced relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people by supporting non-Indigenous artists to engage in sensitive truth-telling about Australia’s colonial past.
