Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Installation of new solar panels and inverter at Northern Life Church
Purpose:
The expression of interest has been lodged by the Baptist Churches of NSW Property Trust on behalf of Hornsby Baptist Church (operating as Northern Life Baptist Church). The Church is surrounded by many high–rise apartment buildings which accommodate many people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as single parent and grand parent families. The area would be one of the more disadvantaged areas of the Bradfield electorate. For over 118 years Hornsby Baptist Church has run services, activities and programs of engagement with our local community. Besides traditional church services, activities include playgroup, childrens and youth programs, school holiday programs, along with engagement programs to lonely and isolated people. We are also involved in SRE and child mentoring programs with our local primary school. The Church employs 6 paid staff to organise, engage actively and mobilise others in these community programs. The Church would like to reduce its considerable power bills and carbon footprint by investing in on–site renewable energy generation. In particular, they seek government assistance to design, purchase and install a new solar photovoltaic generator system. The intention is to have a somewhat modest system that will enable the production of renewable energy to power their lighting, general power and air conditioning for regular everyday administration activities and thus reduce the need for any grid import. These activities generally operate 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday and Sunday mornings so align well with solar energy production. The Church, over time, has already invested in energy efficient practices and comparatively efficient appliances, fixtures and equipment including LED lighting, timed sensor activated lighting and ventilation systems. However, their current 20/21 energy budget is $31,000 (but covid has affected church operations). Energy costs are the second biggest operational cost behind staff.
