Purpose:
This research project aims to:
(a) conduct a randomised trial in very preterm newborns to compare the immune response to transfusion with standard red blood cells with the response to transfusion of washed red blood cells; and
(b) improve understanding of the risk of red blood cell transfusion exposure to the preterm neonate with a view to improving blood management practice and patient outcomes
