Patient Blood Management Project Grant:The impact of the perioperative...
This research project aims to:
(a) Evaluate the impact of the perioperative patient blood management guidelines on blood use, patient outcomes and costs for cardiac surgery by:
- estimating the overall response to the guidelines in terms of reductions in transfusions of blood and associated costs;
- estimating how the response to the guidelines affected patient mortality, morbidity and associated costs;
- providing evidence for the effect of the guidelines on changes in practice that will influence blood use (preoperative actions such as reducing anaemia and ensuring appropriate cessation of antiplatelet medication);
- estimating the strength of response and how that varied across hospitals; and
- showing which aspects of the guidelines changed practice and what were the characteristics of the hospitals who responded.
