Grant Activity:
Type 2 diabetes relief by UPR-mediated beta cell protection
Purpose:
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is caused by insulin deficiency, with obesity a strong risk factor. However, only a small fraction of obese individuals develops T2D. Usually the pancreatic β-cells increase insulin release. This proposal will test the novel hypothesis that an adaptive response to stress helps β-cells increase insulin release and protect against T2D by preventing the conversion of β-cells to other pancreatic cell types. The studies are important for the development of novel therapy for T2D.
