Grant Activity:
How does metabolic conditioning of the host environment enhance persistence of Haemophilus influenzae infections?
Purpose:
To thrive, bacterial pathogens infecting humans require access to high quality nutrients, but our understanding of pathogen nutrition is limited. We will examine how virulence of the respiratory pathogen Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is determined by nutrient availability in the human respiratory tract and how the presence of NTHi changes the way human cells detect infection. The project will identify targets for the development of novel types of antimicrobials that starve NTHi of key nutrients.
