Grant Activity:
Stratifying low-calorie sweeteners for diabetes risk
Purpose:
Low calorie sweeteners are not inert sugar supplements. Rather, they are emerging as a risk factor for the development of diabetes. They can enhance sugar absorption from the gut and disrupt bacteria that live there, which can raise blood sugar levels. However, sweeteners are all distinct and are likely to affect blood sugar differently. We will test these differences in innovative human and animal studies to identify which sweeteners are safer options, in an effort to prevent type 2 diabetes.
