Automating the detection of whales at sea
Purpose:
The project assesses the feasibility of integrated vessel deployed thermal imaging sensors (IR or night vision), rapid optical pointing systems and high–performance onboard image processing for real–time detection, identification and location of whales. In specifically addressing the problem of observations at night through thermal IR sensing, the main deficiency in Australian seismic survey policy compliance, this project will advance the efficiency and effectiveness of round–the–clock marine mammal detection. Evaluating the potential for scaling up of these integrated sensor systems places EOS and Arbor Carbon in a unique position to commercialise existing research and development on marine smart sensors for pre–emptive response.
