Purpose:
Death, postoperative confusion (delirium) often associated with prolonged stay in hospital and cognitive decline are major concerns for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Preliminary studies suggest a cheap sedative, dexmedetomidine, may reduce these risks. This triple blind, placebo-controlled, randomised trial of 1100 older participants undergoing heart surgery will determine whether dexmedetomidine increases the number of Days Free of Delirium or Coma and Alive.
