Purpose:
The Project will assess and optimise Cobalt Blue's (COB) innovative metallurgical process for efficiently treating previously uneconomic pyrite-cobalt ore to produce battery precursor cobalt sulfate and elemental sulfur. A demonstration plant will operate continuously on up to 1000t of concentrate over 12 months to simulate full scale production. Operational parameters, material properties, process controls and mass/energy fluxes will be measured, modelled and optimised, and product analysis will be undertaken on the calcine and sulfur to ensure product specifications are met. If proven, it is expected that the new metallurgical process will enable a doubling of Australia's cobalt production from previously uneconomic pyritic feedstocks.
