PBS Program Name:
DCCEEW 21/22 Supporting reliable, secure and affordable energy
Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Garratt St Centre Solar Power System
Purpose:
This project will install a 20kW solar power system on the roof of the Garratt St Centre, 23 Garratt St, Wanniassa, ACT, using Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installers, system design and guidelines, and meeting all relevant Australian Standards. A recent analysis of current power usage and system benefit indicates that this system will generate 32,062 kWh per annum, meeting 25% of current usage. The benefit is anticipated to be significantly higher than this as activities and programs increase following the easing of COVID restrictions. At this time, the plan for this system is to export the excess energy generated to the grid. A recent assessment indicates that 71% or more of solar energy produced by the system would be exported to the grid, based on current energy consumption. In the future, two factors are likely to reduce the amount of energy exported: firstly, a planned increase in the number of daytime community activities; secondly, the TBC Leaderships commitment to add solar battery technology as this becomes feasible, to offset usage costs for evening activities. Actions completed to date by Tuggeranong Baptist Church are: - obtaining quotes from accredited solar system providers/installers; and - selection and approval of an accredited installer. The timing of next actions are dependent on the easing of COVID restrictions. Next actions include: - a detailed site inspection to confirm site requirements and electrical and structural specifications; - the finalisation of solar system design based on site inspection data; - submission of network applications to the electricity network, and any adjustment to the design based on the response; - confirmation and delivery of stock to the installer; and - installation of the system onsite. Part of TBCs heart to serve the community involves demonstrating that the church cares about community concerns and expectations about contributing to a healthy environment.
