Grant Activity:
Replenishing enzymatic cofactor NAD+ in Heart Failure: Rescuing an engine out of fuel
Purpose:
Although it is well known that the failing heart is "an engine out of fuel", no heart failure therapies target the heart's capacity to generate fuel. This program identified a mechanism common to the major forms of heart failure, whereby a key molecule that helps the heart's fuel generating machinery is depleted. Restoring levels of this molecule were able to recover the heart from heart failure in model systems, which will now be tested in patients in this application.
