Impacts of severe and extensive fire and interactions with feral...
Reptiles and small mammals typically disperse poorly, so populations lost in fires may be slow to re-establish. Further, feral herbivores can degrade habitat, potentially impeding post-fire recovery. Our project will examine whether fire intensity, extent or the effects of large feral herbivores can alter site occupancy by reptiles and a mammal. Our surveys will account for detection probability, with sites stratified by burn severity, extent and feral animal presence. Feral herbivore damage and fire severity will be evaluated on site. Our results will reveal whether conservation translocations could be needed after extensive or severe fire, and whether reptile recovery after fire may be aided by managing feral herbivores.
