Grant Program:
Environment Restoration Fund
Grant Activity:
Species Recovery, Research & Breeding (GA-2000385-591)
Purpose:

The purpose of this ad-hoc grant is to support the survival and long-term recovery and resilience for bushfire affected Australian animals through new captive breeding programs and improved understanding of species resulting from genetic analysis. Specifically, the Grantee will undertake the following: • Establish a captive breeding population of wild-caught Eastern Ground Parrots (Pezoporus wal/icus) at Priam Psittaculture Centre, including the construction and fit-out of an appropriate breeding facility for ex-situ conservation purposes. The captive management and breeding biology learned from this species can also be applied to the Pezoporus genus, including the closely related Western Ground Parrot (Pezoporusflaviventris). Gaining biological data through the management of a captive Eastern Ground Parrot population will increase species knowledge and better aide the recovery and survival of the critically endangered Western Ground Parrot. • Investigate the feasibility of establishing a captive breeding population of wild-caught Hastings River Mice (Pseudomys oralis), including consultation with New South Wales government agencies and application for relevant licences/permits. Undertake the construction and fit-out of an appropriate breeding facility. • In conjunction with the Grantee's activities under Grant Agreement ERF-WRR2-008, expand the existing breeding program for Koonoom Smoky Mouse (Pseudomysfumeus), including instalment of larger enclosures to improve conservation outcomes.
