PBS Program Name:
NHMRC 18/19 1.1 Health and Medical Research
Grant Program:
Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies
Grant Activity:
Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of health service dialysate sodium practice on clinical outcomes
Purpose:
People receiving dialysis suffer from excess cardiovascular disease. There are competing theories on whether sodium exposure during dialysis helps or worsens cardiovascular disease. We are conducting a cluster-randomized clinical study, randomising units to a higher versus lower default approach to sodium exposure during dialysis. We will determine which approach produces better clinical outcomes. This intervention is free, and so the more effective approach could be implemented overnight.
