Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Powering the Regal
Purpose:
One of the major expenses for the Regal Cinema is the cost of electricity with the cost of electricity being around a massive $11,000 per annum with bills averaging from $2,500 to $3,000 per quarter. As well as being expensive, it is also bad for the environment as we are not using solar or renewable energy. The reason for the high cost of electricity is because the building was built in the 1930s when the average temperature was much less than it is today. It was not necessary to use air conditioning but today it is necessary to use the air conditioner most months. Particularly as the Regal has a high number of older patrons who are vulnerable to heat. In the month of January it has been necessary to close the cinema due to the high temperature, and in 2017 the Regal needed to close the weekend of 11 February due to a heat wave. For a number of years the Regal has been working on ways to save energy and reduce energy bills. This includes the installation of pink batts, two new split system air conditioners and an automatic timer for the main air conditioner. We now need to move to installing solar power at the Regal. Various quotes have been sought and it is planned to install 44 x 370W solar panels (by Risen Energy Co Ltd) as well as a 15kW three phase inverter by Sungrow Power Supply Co Ltd. The total cost of this is $16,860.00 and a company quoting for the installation advised that with the Small–scale Technology Certificates/Small–scale Renewable Energy Scheme (STC) incentive that the price will be reduced to $7,900. (Please see quote from Solar Power Nation). Quotes were requested from six companies and Solar Power Nation is the preferred supplier as it is an Approved Solar Retailer by the Clean Energy Council (CEC) plus there are 1,701 reviews on Solar Power Nation on Product Review (https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/solar–power–nation) and the average rating was 4.4 out of 5.
