Grant Activity:
Install a 6.6kw solar photovoltaic system on Taroona Fire Brigade roof
Purpose:
PROJECT MOTIVATION Taroona Volunteer Fire Brigade (TVFB) is a volunteer organisation that operates under the auspices of the Tasmania Fire Service. Brigade members donate their time to respond to emergency incidents and fight bushfires. TVFB is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. While the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) provides the essential infrastructure, firefighting equipment, and training, brigade members still need to raise funds for station improvements and non–standard issue equipment. The TFS does not have the budget to provide anything more than the basics. To date, TVFB has successfully raised funds to resurface its driveway, enhance outdoor lighting, and acquire additional equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, UHF radios, and helmet torches. The station improvements are about creating a safer training environment for volunteers. Additional equipment helps the brigade be a more effective firefighting capability. Station improvements and additional equipment make the TVFB more attractive to members and prospective members. PROJECT SCOPE The Powering Communities Program offers an opportunity for TVFB to be more innovative/creative about fund–raising. The project aims to install a 6.6kw solar photovoltaic system on our fire station roof. This will reduce the electricity bill to the TFS. A portion of the savings can be translated into additional brigade funding. For example, a $1500 saving in the annual electricity bill can be given back to the brigade to spend at its own discretion (a form of cash–back scheme). KEY ACTIVITIES – Install a 6.6kW photovoltaic system on the Taroona Fire Station roof. Add additional bracing if required. – Swap out the old electricity meter with a smart meter. – Upgrade electrical distribution board. – Organise the cashback scheme with the TFS.
