Identifying modifiable health and social determinants of 'deaths of despair': learning from the past to shape new interventions
Purpose:
Deaths of despair (due to alcohol, other substances, and suicide) have risen dramatically in Australia and globally over the last 20 years. These are avoidable deaths given timely and targeted intervention. Using population-based data linkage, novel machine learning methods, and mathematical modelling, we will examine risk factors, and model the impact of potential interventions to reduce deaths of despair to inform targeted strategies and policies to prevent these premature deaths occurring.
