Grant Program:
Soil Carbon Measurement Innovation Challenge
Grant Activity:
Proximal and remote sensing for low-cost soil carbon stock estimation
Purpose:
We will decrease the cost of soil organic carbon (SOC) measurement by combining remote sensing and machine learning to improve the stratification of carbon estimation areas and reduce number of sampling points required to generate high resolution (10 x 10m) SOC maps. This approach is used commercially in Europe and has high potential for adaption to Australia. This will be complimented with improved prediction of SOC using mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) to further decrease the cost of analysis. In partnership with major food producers, we will commercialise these measurement services as part of an open platform to connect farmers with carbon schemes. This work will strengthen our knowledge of Australian soils and improve their vitality.
