Australian and Korean Female Composers in the World of Pianism
Associate Professor Jerry Wong would travel to Korea for a lecture recital at Ewha Womans University. The focus of the presentation would be Miriam Hyde, who was arguably one of the most important forces in music composition and piano teaching in Australia throughout the twentieth century. A/Prof Wong would introduce Hyde’s music through verbal commentary, PowerPoint presentation, and live performance. This is already a focus of interest for Wong, who has presented video recorded performances of Hyde’s work internationally, as well as written a well-received article titled The Legacy of Miriam Hyde for The Piano Magazine (the largest publication of its kind in the United States).
Professor Moonjung Kim from Ewha Womans University (currently the largest female institution of higher learning in the world) would visit University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Prof Kim would present a lecture recital featuring five important Korean female composers: Young-Ja Lee, Sung-Hee Hong, Jiesun Lim, Unsuk Chin, and
Gui-Sook Lee. All were born in the 20th century and their compositions feature a combination of western and eastern elements. Students, staff, and community members in Melbourne would be exposed to these little-known piano compositions through performance and learn of their social and cultural significance.
