Purpose:

This grant provides $143,000 (GST inclusive) of funding to the National Judicial College of Australia (NJCA) for the operation and maintenance of the Commonwealth Sentencing Database (the Database) during the 2018-19 financial year.

The Database is a free-access website that provides high quality information about sentencing for Commonwealth offences. It arose from a recommendation of the Australian Law Reform Commission in its 2006 report Same Crime, Same Time: Sentencing of Federal Offenders. The Database is used by various stakeholders including the judiciary, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP), the Australian Federal Police, and the legal profession, including lawyers, community legal centres and academics. The Database is a joint project of the NJCA, the CDPP, the Judicial Commission of New South Wales and the Australian National University College of Law.
