Grant Activity:
Safeguarding the future of the endangered Northern Bettong
Purpose:
The endangered Northern Bettong has suffered a devastating decline since European settlement. Less than 1,100 individuals remain and the species is listed as one of Australia’s top 20 mammals at highest risk of extinction. The primary driver of this decline is predation by feral cats, followed by altered fire regimes and habitat degradation (introduced herbivores and weeds). Without urgent intervention this ecologically important species will go extinct. This project will construct northern Australia’s first large (950 ha) feral predator–free safe haven, establish a secure population of this ‘critical priority’ species and increase its global population by up to 50%. AWC seeks government support for fence construction and feral eradication.
