Promote Australian/ASEAN collaboration on human trafficking and modern...
Human trafficking and modern slavery are severe problems in ASEAN’s fishing industry. Migrant fishers beyond the boundaries of national protection are particularly vulnerable to forced labour. Australian retailers and consumers are increasingly conscious of modern slavery and trafficking but have limited awareness of this exploitative supply chain in ASEAN/s fishing industries. This project will enable Australian/ASEAN civil society experts to build greater awareness of these serious human rights issues, and knowledge on relevant international and regional human rights standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, and Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act 2018. Civil society will support members of AICHR with policy recommendations to prevent/mitigate and remediate the fishing industry’s rights violations. It will develop a workplan for ongoing civil society collaboration and AICHR engagement. This project will pioneer significant collaboration between Australian/ASEAN civil society and contact between Australian civil society and AICHR.
